New phone!
So T-Mobile had lowered their cost of existing customer upgrades to new phones and also has rebates available (http://www.tmobilerebates.com). I ordered the T-Mobile Dash:

One of the best features of the phone is I can use it as a wireless modem. Since Comcast is still out at my house, I can hook up my laptop to my phone and use it to surf the web. It's obviously not as fast as a cable modem or DSL, but it's using Edge (theoritically ~230kbps), so it's not too painful to surf the web even with lots of graphics. The phone itself is pretty small and really flat and feels good in the hands. The keyboard is probably the smallest they can make it while still being usable. The screen is really nice, although I need to get some sort of screen protector to keep it from being scratched. The only thing I wished it had different was an actual jog wheel on the side for scrolling (like the Blackberries) instead of a slider control.
The most useful feature for me, however, is being able to sync up with my work's Exchange server, so I know what meetings are coming up and get email as it arrives. I can also check on gmail as well as hotmail.

nice phone purchase :)
I think you'll find that default XT9 thingy they have going is no good. hit the blue button, then the space bar, and you can default it to 'abc' or something else more better.
also, that side scroller thing is, well, crap. everyone I know of who has one has turned it off. who knows, maybe it'll work for you.
EDGE is pretty cool, when available. in downtown Bellevue, it's really easy to get an full-signal edge connection. Strangely, it wasn't available here in Shoreline. The fail-over between switching in and out of EDGE coverage is pretty decent though.
and well, you know, since we work with these things, I'll let you know if/when any good ROM updates are out :)
I downloaded a small app that lets me disable XT9 and modify the behavior of the slider, so that's pretty useful. I have access to the Crossbow beta bits, but they don't have it available for the Dash yet. I'll probably stay away from the Beta bits, though :P
