Movie Reviews [Spoiler free]
Recently, I saw Stranger Than Fiction and Cloverfield. I won't reveal anything more than what the commercials revealed, so if you haven't even seen the commercials, stop reading now.
When I first saw the commercial for Stranger Than Fiction, I didn't think much about it. The basic storyline is that a guy played by Will Farrell starts hearing a voice narrate his life. He soon discovers that this voice belongs to an author that is writing a book about his life where he stars as the main character. This plot device sounds quite strange (pardon the pun), but overall, I thought the movie was pretty good and Will Farrell's best movie to date (although that might not be saying much). There were some parts that were genuinely funny (although a more subtle humor than movies Will Farrell is most known for). I would have to say this one is definitely worth a rental.
The other movie I recently saw was the much hyped Cloverfield. The premise of this movie is that some people are at a party with someone filming using a handy cam. Suddenly there's an explosion and the rest of the movie is about this small group of friends trying to find the cause of the "attack" and getting out of the city. I think the concept was a good one, although not entirely original (most people compare it to Blair Witch... which I hated). The handy cam does add a sense of realism, although you have to wonder sometimes how he could keep filming or why someone didn't take his camera away. Ignoring that, it was an interesting movie although I would recommend waiting for DVD. If you're sensitive to motion sickness, you should avoid this movie altogether. I think most people after watching this movie will feel disappointed, although I think a sequel is very likely to be in production.

I haven't seen Cloverfield yet, though I think I will see it in the theater just to give my offering to the hype machine.
As for Stranger Than Fiction, I have to agree with you. I really thought that Will Farrell did a great job with subtle humor - which he isn't known for. The movie also ended a bit differently than I expected it would, and that was a nice change of pace.
I think you'll like Cloverfield.
